How Long Do Crowns Last?

Dental crowns typically last 10-15 years, with many lasting 20+ years with good care.

By Material

Porcelain-fused-to-metal: 10-15 years. All-ceramic/zirconia: 15-20+ years. Gold: 20-30+ years. At Station House Dental Care, crowns start from £590.75.

How to Maximise Lifespan

Avoid biting hard objects, wear a night guard if you grind, attend regular check-ups and maintain good oral hygiene.

A Note from Dr Sarah Metias, Principal Dentist

In my practice, crowns I placed in my early career are still functioning well over a decade later in many patients. Longevity comes down to three things: material choice (zirconia outlasts porcelain-fused-to-metal in my experience), bite management for bruxists, and home care. I see crown failures most often at the margins where poor hygiene allows secondary decay — not the crown itself failing. Look after the gum line around a crown and it will reward you with a long lifespan.
