When root canal is needed

Root canal treatment (from £400) is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected — usually from deep decay, a crack, or trauma. The infection causes pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, and sometimes swelling.

The treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, fills them, and seals the tooth. The result is a gentle, functional tooth that can last many years.

What to expect

Done under local anaesthetic — you shouldn't feel any pain. Your dentist accesses the pulp chamber, removes infected tissue, cleans the canals, fills and seals them. Most cases completed in a single 60–90 minute appointment. A crown is often recommended afterwards.

Do not wait: An infected tooth does not heal on its own. What could be saved with a root canal today may need extracting next month — followed by an implant at 5x the cost.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

You shouldn't feel any pain — the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. Most patients say it feels similar to having a filling.

Is extraction better?

Almost always no. Saving a natural tooth is better for your bite, jawbone and long-term health.

How long does it last?

With a crown and good hygiene, a root-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
