The silent problem
Gum disease begins as gingivitis — red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush. At this stage, it is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis — infection that destroys the bone supporting your teeth.
The challenge is that gum disease is usually painless until the advanced stages. This is why regular hygienist appointments are so important — your hygienist can detect and treat it long before you notice symptoms.
Treatment
Mild (gingivitis): scale and polish plus improved home care. Usually resolves in 2–4 weeks. Moderate to severe (periodontitis): deep cleaning under local anaesthetic, targeting tartar below the gum line. Follow-up monitoring every 3 months.

Gum disease does not wait: Bone loss is irreversible. A £67 hygienist appointment today could prevent a £2,500 implant tomorrow.

Gum Disease and Systemic Health — The Evidence
The link between periodontal disease and systemic health is one of the better-evidenced areas of dental science. Chronic periodontitis is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, poorer glycaemic control in diabetic patients, and adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth. The mechanism is believed to involve systemic spread of inflammatory mediators and bacteria from chronically infected gum tissue.
This does not mean gum disease causes heart disease — the relationship is associative, not proven causal. It does mean that patients with known cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or who are pregnant have additional clinical reasons to maintain optimal periodontal health beyond preserving their teeth.
At Station House, the periodontal assessment at every check-up uses probing depth measurements at six points per tooth — the clinical gold standard for detecting early bone loss before it is visible. Early-stage periodontitis treated promptly loses far less bone than disease that is detected late.
