What causes sensitivity?

Sensitivity occurs when the inner dentine layer becomes exposed — through enamel erosion, receding gums, decay, a crack, or worn fillings. The dentine connects to the nerve, causing sharp pain from hot, cold or sweet stimuli.

Persistent sensitivity — especially to hot temperatures — may indicate nerve involvement, decay or a cracked tooth.

How we treat it

Examination and X-rays identify the cause. Treatment: desensitising varnish for exposed dentine, filling for decay, crown for a crack, or root canal if the nerve is damaged. For general sensitivity, desensitising toothpaste and fluoride varnish often help significantly.

When to call us

Book a check-up if sensitivity persists for more than a few days or affects specific teeth. Sensitivity to heat is more clinically significant than cold.
