What to do right now

Pick up the tooth by the crown — never touch the root. Rinse briefly under cold water (10 seconds max). Do not scrub or let it dry out. If possible, push it gently back into the socket.

If you cannot reinsert it, place it in milk. Time is critical — ligament cells begin to die within 30 minutes. The faster you reach us, the higher the chance of saving the tooth.

At the practice

Your dentist repositions the tooth and splints it to adjacent teeth with a flexible wire. The splint stays 1–2 weeks while the ligament reattaches. Root canal is usually needed within a few weeks. If the tooth cannot be saved, replacement options (implant, bridge, denture) are discussed immediately.

When to call us

Call immediately. This is the most time-sensitive dental emergency. Outside our hours, go to A&E with the tooth in milk.
