What causes bad breath?

In 90% of cases, bad breath originates in the mouth. The most common causes are bacteria on the back of the tongue, gum disease, untreated decay, old dental restorations, and dry mouth.

A dental check-up identifies or rules out oral causes. If no dental cause is found, your dentist may recommend seeing your GP.

How we treat it

A thorough examination identifies the source. Professional cleaning removes bacteria and tartar. Your hygienist will demonstrate tongue cleaning and recommend appropriate mouthwash. Most patients notice significant improvement after a single cleaning.

When to call us

Book a check-up if bad breath persists despite good brushing and flossing. It is a medical symptom, not a hygiene failure.

Clinical Assessment and Treatment at Station House

Every patient presenting to Station House Dental Care — whether for a routine consultation or an acute concern — receives a structured clinical assessment that includes a full examination of the teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and soft tissues, along with digital X-rays where clinically indicated. This thorough assessment means we rarely miss secondary problems that explain why a symptom has developed. Treatment recommendations are based on the GDC's requirement for valid informed consent: we explain the diagnosis, the treatment options (including doing nothing), the expected outcomes, the risks and benefits, and the costs — in writing — before any work begins. Patients are always free to take time to consider their options. There is no pressure to proceed at the consultation appointment.

A note from Dr Sarah Metias, Principal Dentist

"Station House Dental Care was built on the belief that private dentistry should be genuinely accessible — not just to patients who already know what they want, but to those who have been putting off the dentist for years, or who are not sure what treatment they need, or who simply want a dentist they can trust to give them an honest answer. Every patient who comes through our door gets a thorough examination, clear explanation, and a written treatment plan with costs before any work begins. There is never pressure to proceed. My team and I are here to help you make an informed decision about your dental health — whatever that looks like for you."
