What causes toothache?

The most common cause is dental decay. Other causes include a cracked tooth, an abscess, gum disease, or an exposed root surface. The severity of pain does not always match the severity of the problem — all toothache should be assessed.

Constant throbbing, especially at night, often suggests infection. A sharp sudden pain may be a crack. Mild aching can indicate advanced decay. Early assessment means simpler, cheaper treatment.

How we treat it

Examine, X-ray, diagnose, and provide immediate pain relief. Treatment depends on the cause: filling for decay, root canal for infection, extraction if the tooth cannot be saved, or antibiotics for an active abscess. Most appointments take 30–60 minutes.

When to call us

Call as soon as the pain starts. If pain wakes you at night, is accompanied by swelling, or does not respond to painkillers, call first thing — these indicate infection needing urgent attention.
